Edna & Harvey: The Breakout awarded with Red Dot Design Award: Best of the Best 2009
Daedalic Entertainment has been awarded one the most renowned design awards of the world. The German publisher and developer was presented with the Red Dot Design Award: Best of the Best for the cartoon adventure game in the category “Digital Games” on December 9.
The Red Dot Design Award is an international competition, its award recognized as a mark of quality in design circles since 1955. With more than 11,000 submissions from 61 countries, the international Red Dot Design Award is the largest and most renowned design competition in the world. The accolade “Red Dot: Best of the Best” is awarded for the highest design quality, expressing aesthetics, innovation and precision in an outstanding manner. This year, the jury recognized digital games for the first time.
The award was presented to Daedalic’s Creative Director Jan Müller-Michaelis and Managing Director Carsten Fichtelmann at this year’s cermony for the Red Dot Award: Communication Design in front of 900 creative professionals and representatives from media, business and politics.
The expert jury had this to say:
“[Edna & Harvey] features a distinctive and interesting aesthetic, because it disregards current trends in computer games and instead is animated in a very minimalist cartoon style. The story of young Edna, who wakes up in the padded cell of an insane asylum with no memory of her past or how she ended up there, does not resort to 3D particle effects or rendered movies. The player experiences Edna’s breakout in a deliberately reduced cartoon world. As a classic adventure game, this computer game manages to captivate the players through a compelling story, paired with cranky humour and the high versatility of its plot.”

He dreams of a better life in the floating cities of wealth and beauty high above the planet surface. When the angelic Goal falls from these privileged spheres down into a neighboring trash heap, Rufus sees his chance. He decides to bring the unconscious beauty back to her home. Only a vague hope of making it off Deponia at first, he soon formulates an unscrupulous plan, as he learns that he is a dead ringer for Goal’s upper-class husband. The planned handover is only the beginning of a wild chase across Deponia full of twists, turns and mystifying mix-ups…
Deponia is currently being developed for the PC and additional platforms.

Daedalic Developing Serious Game to Fight Illiteracy
Increasingly, games are recognized for their largely untapped potential to make complex things easy to learn: As part of the „Alphabit“-project for the development of an educational game for functional illiterates, Daedalic Entertainment is producing a serious game with the German Adult Education Association and the Fraunhofer Institute.
„Early-on, we have made the development of serious games a part of our business. Daedalic Entertainment is focussed on producing and marketing games with a strong narrative bent. Partners in this project are the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Rostock, the German Adult Education Association, the German Institute for Adult Education in Bonn and the Adult Education Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Schwerin. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministery of Education and Research as part of the initiative for adult literacy and basic education.

Daedalic Receives Funding for Prototype
For the first time, the initiative Hamburg@work is supporting a Hamburg-based games company as part of its prototype funding program. Managing Director Carsten Fichtelmann and Creative Director Jan Müller-Michaelis, who founded Daedalic Entertainment in March 2007, were able to convince the expert panel of their innovative game concept, making them the first company to receive € 100.000 of funding. The project in question is a PC adventure game that puts great emphasis on an atmospheric narrative, not unlike an interactive movie.
The program for prototype funding, the only one of its kind in Germany, is aimed especially at small and medium-sized game industry companies. The production of a prototype is of special importance in games development. It can give an impression of the game idea and its technical implementation, which makes it key in any sales and marketing efforts. Accordingly, the funding supports an important, very early phase of the development process.
Approval of funding is decided by an panel of game industry experts, which advises the representatives of the City of Hamburg on the decision. A conclusive business plan for prototype development is required to be considered for admission to the funding progrmm.
“With great joy, a little pride and a pronounced feeling of responsibility, we’re facing the task of honouring and strengthening Hamburg status as ‘Gamecity’ by producing an internationally competitive prototype with the help of this grant,” expressed Carsten Fichterlmann, founder and managing director of Daedalic Entertainment, his happiness over the positive decision. “The city’s new funding initiative is a chance for young, creative companies to get to eye level with established publishers, since normally the financial basis of a development studio is not sufficient, to complete a product autonomously. This is a great step forward for our young company.”

New Computer and Video Games Publisher Founded
Germany has a new games publisher: Daedalic Entertainment. Since the beginning of the year an as-yet small team has been working on establishing an new developer and publisher of computer and video games. On March 1, 2007 the team moved into their Hamburg offices.
Daedalic is built around a core team of experienced games specialists. Industry veteran Carsten Fichtelmann heads the newly founded company as Managing Director. Fichtelmann served many years as Marketing Director at dtp entertainment, where he contributed much to the German publisher’s rapid growth in recent years.
“In the coming years, Daedalic aspires to become a brand that is recognized by trade, industry and especially by computer and video gamers. We will establish a strong, unique position in the market. As a first step, we’re forming our own development division and will develop a range of properties in several neglected niches. We will publish our games ourselves. Daedalic games will generally convey messages. Our very first project, soon to be announced, will make very clear what that entails,” said Managing Director Carsten Fichtelmann.
